Design Engineer Job description
We are seeking a talented and motivated Design Engineer to strengthen our pump and fabrication departments.
This role requires a strong background in mechanical engineering, with expertise in pump and process engineering as well as sheet metal work fabrication.
The successful candidate will play a crucial role in selecting pumps, developing innovative designs, preparing cost estimates and maintaining strong communication with our customers to ensure their needs are met effectively.
Typical projects include the fabrication of pump skids, conveyors, pipework, tanks, vessels, trolleys, sinks, sanitary-ware and the fabrication of our internationally exported screw feeder pump systems.

Key Responsibilities:
- Design and Development:
- Create detailed designs for pump and process systems using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
- Develop innovative solutions for custom projects and standard products, focusing on efficiency and functionality.
- Collaborate with the manufacturing team to ensure designs are feasible and optimised for fabrication.
- Sheet Metal Work Fabrication:
- Apply your expertise in sheet metal work to develop components and assemblies for our products.
- Work closely with fabricators to resolve design challenges and ensure high-quality output.
- Commercial Awareness:
- Prepare accurate cost and quotation estimates for projects, considering material, labour, and manufacturing costs.
- Evaluate designs for cost-effectiveness without compromising quality.
- Customer Communication:
- Engage with customers to understand their specific requirements and provide tailored solutions.
- Present design concepts and proposals to customers clearly and professionally.
- Project Management:
- Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines are met.
- Work closely with the sales and production teams to coordinate project timelines.
Requirements:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or suitable industry experience.
- Proven experience in pump and process engineering, including system design and development.
- Strong background in sheet metal work fabrication, with hands-on experience preferred.
- Proficient in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and other design tools.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong commercial awareness with experience in cost and quotation estimating.
- Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with customers and internal teams.
- Highly organized and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of the food production industry is a plus.
- You must be able to read drawings and carry out instructions with minimum supervision – taking a job from concept to completion.
- You must be skilled, flexible, focused & efficient.
- You must be fluent in English.
- You must be authorised to work in the United Kingdom.
- You should have a UK driving licence (preferably clean).
- You must be able to reliably commute to Coatbridge.
Job Location
You would be based in our Coatbridge facility (ML5 4FR).
There is occasional travel opportunities to customer sites as required.
Remuneration Package:
- £30,000.00 – £45,000.00 per annum (Dependant On Ability / Experience)
